Have you ever had interest in using oils, but just had no idea where to even start? We have all been there. Thankfully we have the scoop from a super mom of 3 beautiful boys, to give us the the details. We sat down with Sarah and got answers to some top questions we as mamas have.
Sarah, thank you so much for taking time to help us answer some questions. We know you're a busy mama with your newest being just 5 weeks old! We will make this quick!
Which essential oils are/aren’t safe for babies/kids? Does it change with age as to what becomes safe?
With adult supervision and proper dosage, children can safety use essential oils and benefit from their botanical properties. Typically, a younger child or a toddler will require only a few drops of essential oil mixed with a carrier product, such as coconut oil, because they have thinner and more sensitive skin than adults. Therefore, essential oil application is best (and easiest) when applied to the thicker skin of the child’s feet. Avoid using Peppermint oil topically to the upper body of children under 3 years of age as the cooling sensation and effect of the naturally-occurring menthol found in Peppermint can startle them and cause the child to hold their breath. However, Peppermint can be used on the bottom of the feet or diluted in an oil blend, such as doTERRA’s signature Breathe Respiratory Blend. Some essential oils are known as “hot” oils because of the warming sensation it can cause externally on the skin, and they deserve extra caution and care when used on children. “Hot” oils would include Oregano, Cinnamon, Wintergreen, Cassia and Lemongrass. You can create your own essential oil rollerballs for your children by using just 1 to 8 drops of essential oil (depending on their age) in a 10mL glass rollerball and adding coconut oil or another carrier oil of your preference, then simply apply it to their feet or area of concern. If skin sensitivity is caused by an oil in a child or an adult, a carrier oil should be applied, as water will not typically bring relief. Unfortunately, the old saying oil and water do not mix is true and water may cause the oil to go deeper into the skin.
One exciting thing that doTERRA recently launched for children is a new KIDS Collection of custom rollerball blends that was created specifically with little ones needs in mind, as well as the doTERRA Touch Collection. This collection is a set of 9 of the most popular essential oils, pre-diluted, in convenient rollerballs for the whole family. The KIDS Collection includes: Thinker, Calmer, Stronger, Rescuer, Steady, and Brave. Plus, it includes, six silicone toppers with carabiners, instructional flashcards and a cool carrying case with carabiner.
Using an essential oil diffuser is another safe and effective way to use essential oils. A diffuser will not only make your indoor space smell refreshingly aromatic, but it will also purify the air while creating a calming environment with the therapeutic benefits of the essential oils.
Which oils aren’t safe for pregnant Mamas?
I am so glad you asked this question because essential oils were a lifesaver throughout my last two pregnancies and there is a lot of misconceptions out there about NOT using oils in pregnancy. My EO journey started when I was introduced to them in the last couple weeks of my first pregnancy, which was my most uncomfortable pregnancy out of the 3. If I had known about essential oils back then, I think it could have been a much different experience with my firstborn because there are oils you can use safely in any trimester for body pain, sciatica, ligament pain, hand and feet swelling, headaches, nausea, and even during labor. The first thing I want mamas to consider when using and selecting oils to be used during pregnancy is the source and grade of essential oils. Not all oils are created equal, and many essential oils on the market contain synthetic ingredients that should be avoided all together. Look for an essential oil brand that is known to test for purity and potency with genuine testing measures to ensure there are no harmful ingredients. I chose doTERRA essential oils for my family because I feel they meet these standards. Essential oils should be used with caution and moderation in the first trimester when the baby develops rapidly. I prefer to use oils aromatically at this time simply by opening the essential oil bottle and smelling the oils, or putting a few drops of oil in a diffuser or a nasal inhaler, or placing the oils on essential oil diffuser jewelry, such as a leather bracelet or lava beads. Aromatically, the oils can help boost energy and support stress reduction and promote sleep. I found breathing in Ginger and Peppermint in the morning helped to settle my stomach. Throughout pregnancy the skin is more sensitive therefore I always recommend using a carrier oil to dilute and evenly distribute the essential oil, and just as with children, the oils can be applied to the feet of pregnant Mamas too. The one essential oil historically avoided throughout pregnancy for women with a history of preterm labor or miscarriage is Clary Sage, although some women will use it to speed up the birthing process and soothe the contractions.
What are some ways essential oils can ease cold/flu symptoms?
Essential oils serve the body best when used daily, with an overall wellness routine. In our home, we use doTERRA’s On Guard Protective Blend products for cleaning to reduce our toxic load and to help maintain healthy immune function. On Guard products include hand soap, hand sanitizing spray, toothpaste, essential oil and a concentrated cleaner. We apply On Guard Touch to our feet daily at night. When environmental threats are high, we apply the oil more frequently. When we are not feeling well, we select the oils we use based on our needs and we use smaller amounts as not to overwhelm the body. This is the opposite of what most people assume. Many people, especially those new to essential oils only use the oils when they are not feeling their best and think of it like medicine. It is true that essential oils have been used medicinally for millennia, however they best serve the body when used daily as preventative protocol instead.
What is the difference between buying from a brand like doTERRA, sold independently, rather than buying the $5 oil at the grocery store?
Plain and simple, you get what you pay for. doTERRA essential oils undergo strict, rigorous, safety and quality testing and most of the cheaper oils do not. doTERRA’s oils are sourced from around the world from places where the plants grow indigenously so they thrive and grow best for maximum potency. doTERRA works very closely with their farmers to ensure our plants are not genetically modified in any way, and that no outside chemicals or substances make their way into the bottle you’re using. Some of the testing I mentioned include: Organoleptic testing, microbial testing, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Chirality testing, Isotopic analysis, and heavy metal testing. Each bottle has a stamp on the bottom with its own unique testing batch number and you can view your exact bottle’s testing results at www.SourceToYou.com (from the Aromatic Plant Research Center). It is not just the testing and sourcing that sets doTERRA apart from drug store or other brand oils, but the way the oils are carefully extracted, distilled and harvested as well. It really is a unique science.
One special thing I do love to always mention about the brand, and my brand loyalty, is that doTERRA gives back to their global botanical network through what the company calls “Co-Impact Sourcing.” These efforts better the communities doTERRA partners with by providing employment, medical benefits, and housing for underprivileged community members in these other countries. We offer a healthier, sustainable lifestyle to adults and children who sometimes don’t even have personal hygiene products or clean water available to them. It’s definitely a company I can stand behind, knowing they leave a smaller carbon footprint while bettering the lives of women and children all over the world.
Are there any oils you suggest for post-partum?
I just had my third baby five weeks ago and oils are the backbone of my daily care routine. I use doTERRAs Lifelong Vitality Supplements that are full of essential nutrients, metabolism boosting properties, and powerful antioxidants designed to help promote energy, immune function, and health. Grapefruit essential oil can be applied to the feet and ankles to aid with circulation and proper fluid balance. I also really enjoy the Elevation Joyful Blend, Balance Grounding Blend, and Serenity Restful Blend for emotional support. These are constantly running in my diffuser at home or applied topically to my wrists or feet to uplift and balance the postpartum mood shifts. These oils also help to balance the transition for siblings as well. Immortelle Blend or Frankincense can aid in the healing of cesarean scars when applied topically. Fennel is known to support breastfeeding supply and Peppermint is known to decrease breast milk supply, especially when topically applied to the breasts or taken internally. For clogged or blocked ducts, Basil or Citrus Bliss blend massaged around the breast and armpit area can bring fast relief. For mastitis try Melaleuca, Thyme, Clove, Rosemary, Wild Orange or Lavender massaged from the armpit down towards the nipple (avoiding the nipple tissue). Clary Calm blend can be applied to the abdomen to help ease after birth pains and can be applied to the inner ankle acupuncture point to help balance hormones. Clary Calm is also beneficial for monthly menstrual discomfort when applied to the abdomen.
What are the must have products from doTERRA, in your opinion, Sarah?
My top must have essential oil products include Lavender touch rollerball as part of our children’s nighttime routine, On Guard blend, both topically and in the diffuser for daily immune support, Deep Blue Rub for pre and post workouts, Breathe Respiratory Blend for restful sleep and opening up the airways, and Lifelong Vitality Supplements for just about anything and everything you can think of including mommy brain, pain, fatigue, etc. Fun fact; the Life Long Vitality Supplements are doTERRA’s number one selling product because they cover an array of health concerns and they work so quickly to remedy said issues.
